For many couples, money and marriage go together like oil and water. Everyone has a different way of doing it, and if one person is managing the finances and comes upon a difficult decision or conversation that needs to take place, it can be tough to do that with the partner that likely has no clue that there’s a problem brewing.

Trouble over money is one of the top-two leading causes of divorce, so it’s important to have a financial checkup as a couple on a regular basis—not just when there’s a problem.

Buffalo Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at four strategies to talk money with your spouse and not feel bad about it.

  1. Come to the Best Decision

Chances are you will not be in full agreement over the decision. The important thing is to talk it out and come to a solution that you’re both satisfied with. Neither of you will be totally happy, but you will have chosen the best path forward as a unit and prevented potential problems down the road.

  1. Don’t Wait Until It’s a Big Deal

This goes without saying, but it’s easier said that done. Don’t hide things until they become a problem, and don’t wait to have a money talk until you’re upset with your partner over something. Aim to have regular discussions, so it’s not always a negative thing when you do talk about money.

  1. Be Truthful

You may not think of cheating as being unfaithful with you and your partner’s money, but it can have the same damaging effects as the more common definition of infidelity. Studies show that around one-third of Americans are doing this, and lying about money-related issues will always lead to a discussion that becomes even more difficult to have.

  1. Two Heads Are Better Than One

Another great aspect of collaborating is that you can each put your strengths to work and hide your weaknesses. You are likely aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so work together, and you will likely come up with a better plan.
