We all deal with a daily amount of stress in our lives, but there are times where it feels overwhelming. While any serious side effects need to be discussed with a doctor, if you’re feeling like you’re at the boiling point, there are some quick things that you can try to help cope and relieve the tension.

Buffalo Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing is passing along four quick tips for coping with stress.

  1. Perform Breathing Exercises

Sit or lie down and put your hand on your stomach. You’ll want to breathe in through your nose, and your hand should rise on your stomach as you do so. Then exhale slowly through your mouth and let your stomach fall while doing so. Repeat for one minute.

  1. Relax Each Muscle

Lay down and relax. Then starting with your feet, tense each muscle up and then relax it. Do this for each muscle group all the way up to your head.

  1. Travel Somewhere Mentally

By closing your eyes and visualizing, using music, or watching videos, get away for a few minutes and take a mental vacation to somewhere that would be relaxing for you.

  1. Mindfully Exercise

Do some low- to moderate-intensity cardio activity like a walk or easy bike ride and focus on the repetitive nature of your movements, the natural beauty around you, or focus on other sounds or sights that are calming and allow your mind to be at ease.
